About The Yorkshire Terrier

  • Temperament

The heart of a combative, old-time terrier beats beneath the dainty, glossy, floor-length coat of a Yorkshire Terrier. Don't be fooled by their cuteness. The breed has a combination of an endearingly petite size, and an adventurous terrier character, smart and self-assured. Some are soft and bouncy, wanting nothing more than to walk around in their people's footsteps all day. Others are naughty, outgoing, and interested in everything. They're a popular choice among city dwellers around the world. Yorkies live a long time and are hypoallergenic (their coat resembles human hair rather than animal fur), and they make excellent watchdogs. They excel at everything from dog sports, like agility, to therapeutic work as a result of these characteristics, making them excellent travel companions and family pets. Yorkies are noted for their silky, long coats that flutter around in the show ring. However, maintaining this lovely feature takes time. Because the coat is identical to human hair, if the owner does not brush it every day, it tangles into knots. The fact that Yorkies don't have an undercoat means that they shed less than human hair. Many breeders advise owners to keep them in a "puppy cut," which is short and easy to care for. You'll have a loyal, adorable pet who'll stick to you like a shadow if you can provide lots of love, attention, and care. Though they may be devoted to their owners, they are cautious of strangers and will bark at unexpected sounds and intruders. It's crucial to keep your dog's barking under control and teach them when not to bark. Teacup Yorkies perform better with older children who have been trained to appreciate them than with toddlers and little children due to their size. If startled or teased, they can become irritable. They'll get along with other resident dogs no matter where they live, as long as they were raised with them. If a new pet is brought into the house, Yorkies may get protective of their owners. They may want to challenge the new dog since they are terriers. When introducing a Yorkie to a new animal, exercise caution. Yorkies tend to keep their puppy teeth. Check your puppy's teeth frequently after he reaches the age of five months. Take him to the vet if you observe an adult tooth attempting to erupt, but the baby tooth remains. Retained baby teeth might cause adult teeth to erupt unevenly, increasing the risk of tooth decay in the future. Yorkies dislike the cold and are susceptible to getting chills, especially if they are moist or in damp environments.

  • History

Yorkshire Terriers (commonly known as "Yorkies") are a breed of dog that originated in Yorkshire (and neighboring Lancashire) in northern England. Workers from Scotland arrived in Yorkshire in search of work in the late nineteenth century, bringing with them a variety of small terriers. Yorkshire Terrier breeding was principally accomplished by people—mostly operatives in cotton and woolen mills—in Yorkshire and Lancashire counties. Yorkies were developed to hunt rats and vermin in textile mills and coal mines at first. They were all initially bred from Scotch Terriers (note: meaning dogs from Scotland, not today's Scottish Terrier) and presented as such. The name Yorkshire Terrier was given to them on account of the breed originating from Yorkshire. Initially, any terrier-shaped dog with a long coat and fawn or silver coloured bodies was classified as a Yorkie. However, in the late 1860s, a prominent Paisley type Yorkshire Terrier show dog named Huddersfield Ben, owned by a woman from Yorkshire named Mary Ann Foster, was shown at dog shows all throughout the United Kingdom and defined the Yorkshire Terrier breed type.

Yorkie puppies can make you feel better.

Dog owners are less likely to be depressed, and their serotonin and dopamine levels are higher than non-dog owners, owing to the fact that dogs are comforting and familiar friends who help reduce tension and anxiety. Yorkies make great pets because they are so friendly and cute. Yorkie Puppies are also natural conversation starters, encouraging social engagement even among hesitant puppy owners. You are more likely to participate in fulfilling relationships with people who make you happy if you have more social interaction.

Their Small Size Is an Advantage.

Some dog enthusiasts may consider Yorkshire Terriers' small size to be an issue because of their natural fragility. Their diminutive stature, on the other hand, makes them a perfect pet. Yorkies are not only easy to carry and manage, but they also don't require a lot of space to be comfortable. This is why they are such a great pet for seniors and those with physical disabilities.

The Yorkie's diminutive stature allows owners to take them places where many other dogs are not permitted. They can be transported inside stores and even sit in the cabin of planes rather than the frigid, often deadly cargo hold. Rather than being a drawback, their small size is an asset.

Grooming a Yorkshire Terrier.

To avoid matting and tangling, Yorkshire Terriers' long silky coats require a lot of grooming. Brush your Yorkie's fur gently every day to remove any knots and to clean around their eyes and check their ears. If you do decide to bathe your Yorkie puppy, make sure to use a specific dog shampoo to protect their skin and then pat them dry gently. Yorkshire Terrier owners can expect to take their puppies to a professional groomer on a frequent basis; you may even ask to observe grooming sessions to learn how to care after your puppy’s coat at home.

Between 15 and 30 percent of Americans are thought to have a pet allergy of some sort. Although cats are more commonly allergic, allergic reactions to dogs are more severe.

This is especially true for people who have asthma, as they are at a higher risk of significant complications.

Hypoallergenic dogs like Yorkies (Yorkshire Terriers) are thought to make life simpler for allergy and asthma sufferers. Yorkies are one of the breeds that is frequently recommended as a good choice because of their non-shedding coats, which means less dander in your home!
